How we check.
Exactly how the ingredient check works, where the list comes from, and what it can't do. No black box.
What happens when you press check.
Your pasted list is split into ingredient names and compared against the Galwise lexicon — a hand-maintained list of mammal-derived ingredients and the names they hide behind. The comparison happens on your device. The text you paste is not sent to Galwise or anyone else. There is no AI guessing in this tool: a name either matches the lexicon or it doesn't, and the same input gives the same answer every time.
Where the lexicon comes from.
Every entry is compiled by hand from published clinical and food-science sources on Alpha-Gal Syndrome, and each entry carries its source in our records. We add names when the AGS community and the literature surface them. The lexicon is versioned — this page always shows the version your check used.
Lexicon v1.0.0 — 284 names — updated June 2026.
What the three results mean.
Unsafe — the list contains an ingredient that is mammal-derived. We name it and tell you what it is. Caution — the list contains an ingredient that is sometimes mammal-derived — glycerin, mono- and diglycerides, natural flavors, and similar. The label usually doesn't say which source was used. We flag it so you can ask. Nothing found — no name on the list matched a mammal-derived ingredient we know. That is not a guarantee — labels change, suppliers change, and our lexicon, like every list, is finite. Check the current label every time.
What this tool cannot do.
It can't see past the label. If a manufacturer writes 'natural flavors,' we can't know what's inside it — neither can you, and we say so instead of guessing. It can't read brand names — paste the ingredient panel, not the product name. It can't diagnose anything, and it is not medical advice. And it can't replace your own read of the label: we're a second set of eyes, not the last word.
Who checks the checker.
The lexicon is maintained by Galwise and reviewed against its sources on every update. No physician has signed off on this tool, and we won't imply otherwise — when clinical review happens, the reviewer's name and date will be on this page. Found an error or a missing name? Email hello@galwise.co — corrections ship fast, and this page's date moves when they do.
This page is education, not medical advice. Formulations change — confirm with your pharmacist or prescriber.
